Every good trader knows that self-discipline is one of the essential traits they should have in order to succeed. But one trait which does not get discussed much but which is also essential to becoming a profitable trader is perseverance. A professional trader understands that trading is like running a marathon, and that to succeed, he has to think long-term rather than in terms of just successfully winning individual trades.
The best traders are those who have a good trading plan and the discipline to stick with it, but perseverance ensures that they will not waver from it in the long-run even when they face losing trades. The runners who successfully finish marathons are not the ones who are the strongest but the ones who are the most prepared and have the perseverance to continue even when they get tired or stumble. Similarly, the traders who become successful at making trading a career are those who think long-term rather than in terms of quick profits.
One skill that can help you persevere is good money management. When you manage your money responsibly, you will never be emotional when you trade because you understand that you are not risking so much on a single transaction that the loss will be catastrophic. You have carefully gauged the amount of risk you are accepting on a trade and accepted the possibility that the trade will not go your way. In addition, you understand that the money you are trading with is ‘risk capital’ or money that you can afford to lose without substantially affecting your lifestyle, i.e. money that you need to pay the rent or meet basic living expenses. And you don’t let your emotions affect you on the way to achieving your goal.
To sum up, the best trader does not see trading as a quick sprint to the finish line, but rather a long haul to the end. In order to ensure that you finish, you need to pace yourself to ensure that you don’t burn out. You should also expect that along the way you will experience setbacks and problems, but as long as you keep running and stick to the plan that you have created, you will not only finish the race but you will end up at a better place than where you started.
